Why St. James is the right fit for your family

Our Classrooms

St. James classrooms house certified teachers who love our students.  We have a 14:1 student to teacher ratio, which ensures that every student gets one on one attention during the day.  Each classroom has a projection that it utilized throughout the day for teaching. We have over 60 school computers used daily in our classrooms.  In K-2 we have incorporated the A-Z reading program to help better our student's learning.  We recently upgraded our school-wide math curriculum to Sadlier-Oxford Math books and now offer an Algebra I option for our 8th grade students. All Kindergarten thru 8th grade students have specials throughout the week that include Music, Art, Library, Technology and PE four days a week.

Philosophy of st. james school

St. James School is a vital part in the Catholic Educational System of the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese.  St. James has as its priority to teach the Gospel message, to build community, and to serve the human community through prayer, worship, and social action.  It is essential that the school provide these opportunities for its students in an atmosphere of trust, enthusiasm, and general concern for every child.  The practice of this philosophy is St. James’s contribution toward developing a fuller Christian family life, responsible citizenry, a caring society, global moral consciousness, and an environment in which the pursuit of peace and justice is recognized as the norm for daily living and interaction with others.

Goals of st. James school

Our prime objective is to provide learning experiences that will develop persons strong in faith and knowledgeable of their faith.  It is the purpose of the St. James faculty and staff to achieve this objective in the following manner:

  • To develop an awareness that each child is an unique individual and has the ability to develop his/her own potential;
  • To teach personal responsibility, acceptance, respect, charity, and social justice to one another through classroom opportunities, as well as through the example of each faculty member;
  • To provide an adequate, sequential curriculum enabling the faculty to develop excellence in academics;
  • To create an atmosphere of trust, enthusiasm, and awareness that will promote the growth of a healthy self-concept.

ACCREDITATION

St. James School is accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) and the Missouri Chapter of the National Federation of State Non-Public Schools Accrediting Association.   A yearly self-evaluation is conducted as well as a five-year assessment by an evaluation team.

Living Faith

Living Faith

Jesus is the reason for our school. At St. James, our Catholic identity goes beyond daily religion class; it influences everything we do. We are blessed with the presence of the School Sisters of Christ the King. Their love for God makes a deep impact on our students.

  • Our students attend mass twice weekly, attend benediction every Friday, and have access to confession at least once a month.
  • We begin and end each day in prayer and pray the Angelus at noon.
  • Father Harkins and the Sisters visit every class weekly for a religion lesson.
  • Each classroom has a crucifix, Marian statue, and prayer table decorated for the liturgical season.
  • We have prayers, sacrifices, and service projects during Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.
  • Our second graders spend the year preparing to receive First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.
  • Our fifth graders attend a vocations day.
  • Our seventh graders travel to Washington D.C. for the March for Life.
  • Our eighth graders study The Theology of the Body for Teens.

 We hope that our students go forward with a strong knowledge of God and the desire to share His love.

Family

Faculty and staff who know you and love you like family.

We are a parish family, we are a school family. St. James offers a student-teacher ratio and student-sister ratio that cannot be matched. Our teachers are deeply committed to our students and to leading them closer to Christ. We work together, we study together, we pray together, and we play together: we are truly family.

Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air; but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.
— 1 Corinthians 9:24-7
